Joe Davola - Awesomeness TV, One Tree Hill, Smallville, What I Like About You, All That

Joe Davola

A couple of years ago I was working on a network show. They had asked for an acting coach because they were having a problem getting a performance out of one of their leads. I had my own monitor to watch, their craft services were famously first rate, so … All good, no bad.

Day 1 on set. I get my coffee (excellent!) and my snacks (very good!) and as they start shooting, I go over to my monitor. Take one and cut. The Lead listens as the director says, …”you’re really in love – you need to have more joy in your lover’s presence.”

The Lead’s eyes close  …. which is on-set behavior for, “Oh God, I know that, I’m already doing that.  I don’t know what else to do. I really want to please you, but clearly at this point,  I’m going to be fired.” The Lead’s eyes and mouth finally open and out come the words, ‘I Got It.’

Take two: The Lead don’t got it.

The Executive Producer walks over to me and says, ‘you see what a big problem this is, can you help?’

I nod. It is, after all, what they are paying me to do. Here comes The Lead, and while continuing to drink my coffee (Excellent!) and eat my snacks (so good!), we share a meaningful look. The Lead comes close and we whisper together. Both of us laugh really hard and The Lead nods to me and says, “sure I can do that,” and ten seconds later, goes back to set. Aaaaand action. The Lead plays the scene exactly the same way except..? For what it took us ten seconds to discuss. Aaaaand cut.

They love it! Relief all around – “Moving on!,” says the First Assistant Director. And as everyone starts hustling to set up for the next scene, the execs come over to me, wanting to know what we spent only ten seconds discussing. “Well,” I say, sipping my coffee and eating my snacks, “suffice it say …”

“We tell stories in pictures.”

"It's the actor's job to be out of control, but somehow as a professional to be ...
in control slightly of being out of control.

And if you're good, you don't wanna be in total control; everything will be boring.
It'll be planned and there will be no spontaneity -

So you want to be slightly out of control of being in control -

So you're a person at the same time ...
being out of control of being in control, and being in control of being out of control …

... and in this way lies certain institutions that you can be sent to. "
